What is prayer?

One of the most simple questions to ask, yet we rarely ask it. We all just assume we know what prayer is without a second thought. But do we really know what prayer is? Not just what it is, but its significance.

What is prayer?

In the context of a conversation. Prayer is our half of the communication with God. Prayer is the term given to our sending a message to God. Distinct and separate from mere thought or ponderings. It’s a consious and intensional direct address. Supplication (asking, begging). This is not limited to language. It’s also a groaning. Something beyond words. Sometimes we dont have the words to say what we want. Yet God knows our heart. Romans 8 – the spirit helps us in our weakeness. We dont know how to pray as we ought. But the spirit himself interseeds for us. Too deep for words.

Why do we pray?

Why do we pray? We believe that God works all things for good. That prayer is the instrument God uses to bring about his his will, plan and purposes. For the goodness, restoration and reconcilliation of all things. Romans‬ ‭8:28‬ ‭And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

When do we pray?

When do we pray? – We pray in times of difficulty, suffering and pain. For help, support healing and wisdom. We also pray it times of joy happiness and contentment. Of thankfulness and praise for all God gives. Ultimately to come into alignment with Gods will knowing his perfect plan is always the perfect answer to all things.

Prayer Mechanics

First and foremost, prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God. We know who God is and what he is like. This helps us to hear, see or understand the responses to prayer. Some find closing their eyes helpful to quiet their thoughts or distractions from their surroundings. To focus themself on God to the best of their understanding. By doing this we step into the eternal relationship between God (father son and spirit).

This channel to God is made possible by Jesus death on the cross. His death bridges the gap that our sin created between us and God. We approch God with the understanding of a Holy perfect father in heaven. Sending our messages to him. In faith that he cares and desires them. With a desire to bring goodness to our lives.

As we read our bibles. God reveals more of his will and perfect plan. Prayer is for the here and now. But it is also an investement in eternity.
